How to Check Your Internet Speed — and What the Numbers Mean

Is your internet fast or slow? The answer depends on three numbers: download speed, upload speed, and ping. Our free Speed Test measures all three in under a minute, right in your browser.

Check download speed, upload speed and ping instantly.

What is Download Speed?

Download speed measures how fast data travels from the internet to your device. It affects how quickly web pages load, how smoothly videos stream, and how fast files download. Measured in Mbps (megabits per second).

What is Upload Speed?

Upload speed measures how fast data travels from your device to the internet. It affects video calls, uploading files, streaming yourself live, and sending emails with attachments.

What is Ping?

Ping (or latency) measures how long it takes for a signal to travel from your device to a server and back. Measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower ping = faster response. Critical for online gaming and video calls.

What Speeds Do You Need?

  • Browsing & email: 1–5 Mbps download
  • HD video streaming: 5–10 Mbps download
  • 4K streaming: 25+ Mbps download
  • Video calls (Zoom/Meet): 3+ Mbps upload
  • Online gaming: Ping under 50ms
  • Working from home: 25+ Mbps download, 10+ Mbps upload

📡 Getting slow results? Try restarting your router, move closer to your WiFi source, or run the test with a wired ethernet connection for the most accurate reading.

How to Get the Most Accurate Result

  1. Close all other tabs and apps using the internet.
  2. Pause any downloads or streams running in the background.
  3. Run the test 2–3 times and average the results.
  4. For a baseline, run the test at different times of day.
