What is an IP Address? How to Find Yours in 5 Seconds

Every time you connect to the internet, your device is assigned a unique number called an IP address. It's how the internet knows where to send information back to you — just like a home address for your online activity.

What Does IP Stand For?

IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is a numerical label (e.g., 192.168.1.1) assigned to every device connected to a network.

Two Types of IP Addresses

  • IPv4 — The older format: four numbers separated by dots, like 203.0.113.45. Most devices use this.
  • IPv6 — The newer format: longer, using letters and numbers, like 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334. Designed to handle the billions of devices now on the internet.

Public IP vs Private IP

Your public IP is what websites and servers see when you connect. It's assigned by your internet provider and identifies your network to the outside world. Your private IP is the address your router gives your individual device inside your home network.

What Information Does an IP Address Reveal?

Your IP address can show your approximate location (city and region), your internet service provider, and your timezone. It cannot reveal your exact home address, your name, or any personal details.

🔒 Privacy tip: If you want to hide your IP address, consider using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN replaces your real IP with one from a different location.
