How is BMI Calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) Γ· heightΒ² (mΒ²)
For example, if you weigh 70kg and are 1.75m tall: BMI = 70 Γ· (1.75 Γ 1.75) = 70 Γ· 3.0625 = 22.9
BMI Categories
- Under 18.5 β Underweight
- 18.5 β 24.9 β Normal weight β
- 25 β 29.9 β Overweight
- 30 β 34.9 β Obese Class I
- 35 β 39.9 β Obese Class II
- 40 and above β Obese Class III
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a useful screening tool but it has limitations. It doesn't account for muscle mass (a muscular athlete may have a high BMI without being unhealthy), bone density, age, or where fat is distributed in the body.
